I kickstarted Theropods way back, and very glad I did - it's fantastic! Also, nothing like I expected. That is to say, I expected (and got) to explore a prehistoric village and the wilderness nearby where I went hunting dinosaurs. But the brutal invasion by a nearby tribe and the introduction of aliens and robots? Didn't see it coming.
Aesthetics
Pixellated & glorious. Evokes exactly the retro vibe us grognard point & click fans love, while making the most of modern technology with plenty of detail and animations. What impressed me most, I think, was the range of colour palettes used as I went from valley to beach, village to forest, and day to night. Each scene varies greatly from the last, making the world feel really big and open and never repetitive. Also, Theropods includes some really lovely cutscenes between chapters and at other pivotal moments.
Gameplay
There's no talking in Theropods, so left clicking acts on everything with no separate look function. There's a small amount of pixel hunting but, thankfully, a hotspot highlight feature. Puzzles are organic rather than stand-alone; you won't be trying to decode or decipher anything, for example. It's more just about trying to react to and survive your environment. For exaple, trying to hunt the dinosaur at the start involves you chasing it around several screens, while trying to put obstacles to block its path so you can push it toward a trap you built out of materials found in the environment. This puts more emphasis on the story and your role in it, and there's still some thinking involved - the solution is usually right in front of you but you need to work out the right combination or sequence to find it.
Verdict
I absolutely rate Theropods. Geat graphics, a great story, well-thought-out puzzles. Always interesting, never frustrating. Honestly, a top tier modern point & click that I also think this would be a friendly title to introduce your family to if you have little ones new to the genre.
