I was spoiled for "Mini Micro Machines"-esque racing games a few years back, with the likes of Pretend Cars Racing and Turbo Sliders, but the genre's been pretty quiet for a while. I've had my eye on Super Power Sliders for a while, following the development over Twitter, and I was very excited to see it finally released into Early Access!
Aesthetics
Suitably toy car-like, and definitely leaning toward an arcadey sort of aesthetic. Of course there are a range of cars, from Mini Coopers to Mr. Whippy Vans. Each level so far (as the game's in EA, only the first cup is currently playable) has been well-designed and fun to play on, with a range of map types; speedway, rally, etc. They've so far all been on typical bitumen race tracks in urban settings but feature plenty of value-adds; crowds in the stands, houses, trees, boats, cones, signs - and much of it is destructible if crash into it. There's also the weather, which even leaves slippery puddles of water on the road when it rains.
Gameplay
The controls are nice and smooth, with rapid acceleration and plenty of drifting, as expected for the genre. However, SPR also includes Mario Kart-style power-ups, so while racing you'll be firing off missiles and dodging oil slicks, which is always fun. Another feature that sets SPR apart from the rest is the zombie mode! There's only one level of it in the campaign so far but in short, instead of competing against other racers, you have to zip around the track causing as much carnage as possible and aiming for the highest zombie kill count. I believe every cup will have some sort of special mission; a couple of days ago, the dev mentioned the possibility of some sort of police chase. And if that's not enough I haven't mentioned my favourite feature yet, which is the interactivity of the levels. A particularly memorable moment for me was when I took a jump on one level, which launched me into a helicopter, which then crashed and killed a bunch of zombies. It was awesome. Finally, I wanted to note that this is a racing game that really encourages player skill; there are lots of nifty boosts you can gain by managing timing when drifting, drafting, starting, and so on. And, thankfully, even a driving school where you can learn all the tricks.
Verdict
So far, excellent - even better than I expected. It looks great and the racing feels exactly like what I look for in a game like this. What really impressed me were the powerups and general interactivity of the maps overall. And we're only on the first season so far, I can't wait to see what the rest has in store for us.
