I'm a sucker for card battlers but they're a dime a dozen these days and many seem to be pretty much just "the same game" but re-skinned. So what I really like to see is games with an interesting take on the genre: MegaBattle is just that!
Aesthetics
Bright, colourful, and somewhat cartoony. Card art & equipment parts are kept simple and easy to read but you also get to watch intact animated versions of your robots fight it out in the middle of the screen every time you carry out your attacks. UI is very neat; graphics are all high quality and there's plenty of polish everywhere you look.
Gameplay
It's robot duels! You control a robot and so does your opponent, and it's always one-on-one. As expected, your cards are your moves and energy is spent to use them. However, the robots functions in their parts. So, for example, even for a simple "strike" attack, you must select which part of your robot to attack with, and which part of your opponent to attack. When a part is destroyed it can no longer be used, limiting options while also acting as a breach. Further damage to a broken part deals integrity damage and when a robot hits zero integrity, they're out of the battle. You can upgrade and find new parts as you progress, and they often come with some sort of special ability. Likewise, you upgrade and collect new cards as you progress; often more powerful but synergy is the key to success here. I blitzed my first game by making a build that pumped out light blades which also gave bonuses to those light blades. It meant all my other attacks (even the powerful ones!) became redundant and diluted my deck, but I became an absolute shredder. There are plenty of other strategies to explore and, delightfully, your opponents will be using them on you too. There are also permanent upgrades that can be purchased between runs.
Verdict
MegaBattle is a lot of fun. I really love the focus on the robot parts, as it adds an interesting layer of strategy where you at times have to juggle between crippling a dangerous part, dealing direct damage while you have the opportunity, charging boosts, or protecting yourself. Fighting on crippled and trying to repair yourself mid-battle is cool too. I think the game could benefit from some more variety which might hopefully get added down the track anyway but otherwise I rate it.
