4PGP released back in February - but only on Switch. Now it's out on Steam (and Playstation), I got my chanced to give it a go!
Aesthetics
Something about that cover art just screamed "Modern Day Daytona!" at me. Daytona USA, that is; a childhood favourite arcade game which, unbelievably, can still be found in cinemas and bars where I live. Playing it gave me the same vibe, though the graphics are much, much better. Not photo-realistic, they still give off an arcade feel which I like, but very polished. And there's tons of value-add in the backgrounds, with loaded audience stands, buildings and trees, all the usual stuff that bring the game to life nicely. And the UI is fantastic. Minimalist but very easy to read, clean, polished to a tee.
Gameplay
The first thing you'll notice is that 4PGP is very fast. Much faster than Daytona, the speed reminded me more of V-Rally, another favourite childhood game. It was a bit of a trap for me because, while the speedway tracks were simple enough, I initially tried to rally my way around the tighter circuits, and it did not work at all. You really need to play this like an F1 - a much faster, more powerful machine than any rally car. Play your lines, hug your corners... you'll find yourself de-accelerating far more often than breaking, and using the car's power to bring you back in line again. When you do need to brake for those gnarly hairpins, it's not like a normal car braking - merely tapping the brake will pull you up very sharply. Your car's aerodynamics play a big part here, allowing you to turn much more drastically than you might expect, and away you go again. I have no idea if any of this is realistic but it sure is fun to play. You also have a turbo button, which I think is supposed to help you get more out of the long straights, but which I mostly used to compensate for slower acceleration on some of the cars with higher top-end speeds. You'll need to check car stats before you race, picking the right car for each circuit, and winning cups allow you to unlock more powerful cars, which in turn let you compete in higher difficulty settings.
Verdict
If you prefer your slower car games with more realistic physics, give this one a miss. But if you're a fan of break-neck speed arcade-style racing games, 4PGP hits the spot nicely.
