Millenium Runners is a slick if troubled racing game in the vein of Wipeout and Redout. While Millenium Runners is certainly very fun to play, unfortunately it is currently riddled with a couple of very nasty bugs that prevented me from making any progress in the campaign or grand prix modes, so my review is limited to playing single races in arcade mode. The game's only been out for a few months on Steam so I'm very hopeful the developers will eventually fix the bug, because it's otherwise a fun and very promising game with a lot to offer.
Aesthetics
The graphics are fantastic - detailed backgrounds showing off a range of settings from urban megascapes to alien worlds. Millenium Runners makes great use of the 3d space to create long speed vertical speed curves (as well as horizontal), tracks that cut from narrow to wide and back again, tunnels and open spaces. Even the UI looks great. Really, just a sexy game overall.
Gameplay
For the most part, Millenium Runners is exactly what we want to see in a Wipeout-style racing game. It's really, really, exhilaratingly fast, requires a combination of both turning and leaning to navigate at those speeds, and makes great use of the three dimensions to make for some exciting levels. Speed's the key here; you've got a boost button to make most of your straight-aways but you can never afford to go too slow. Even when you hit a gnarly sharp turn, the trick's to use your wings to lean into a drift rather than slowing. Otherwise, gentle's the touch. Sometimes you'll want to steer through a turn, otherwise you need to wing across, but hitting both is often a recipe for disaster. The maps are huge and the courses varied so you'll have plenty of time to have a crack at all sorts of racing styles. Each level also has an assortment of speed boosts and traps that you'll need to avoid - usual grease-style traps but on some levels you'll even face an aerial bombardment that really sends you rocking. The ships feel very different to each other too, so you'll want to experiment to find the one that best fits your play style, and you'll probably also want to swap between ships to find the one that's the best fit for each track. I'm assuming these need to be unlocked during campaign but in arcade mode there's a range to choose from, along with nine tracks to play on.
Verdict
I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've played, although I think a little more work might be needed in improving the AI, catch-up, and collision mechanics. The ships feel very different, the levels are great, the graphics are amazing, the races are super fast.... but in its current buggy state I was only able to play single races where I'd really love to dig into campaign mode. I hope it gets fixed soon!
